Can someone explain the definition of 1/2 life to me? A clear, simplified answer? I am not a simple person, but more of a visual learner. So, when it's broken down for me in language, I can break it down in my brain and 'see' to understand what I'm reading. Make sense? Hopefully? @lemonhead ~ no making fun of the new kid! :P

Hello Jillynnie. I can answer that for you. A half life is how long a drug, when taken, it takes your body to break down that drug, retain in in your body, and then leave your body. Some medications can stay in your blood system, often say a week. Another from the time thats its taken, might leave your body within the same day you took it. A short halflife, taken is just that. The drug effectively works for a short period of time. A long halflife, means it will stay within your body for days, often a week, even longer. Hope this helps. I'm not a chemist either. :-0)

And just to add as an example. Say you are taking drug A versus drug group B. Both do the same, as treating you. The only difference that A leaves your body in 48hours. (short halflife). B has a long halflife. It will stay in your body for 96hours (longhalf). If you were taking A, you need to take it sooner than B. The plus of being on drug A and you were to have a bad or allergic reaction, to it, it will stop doing that because unlike B, it will have left your body, where as in B, you would still be feeling that allergic reaction for another 48hours or so.
Thanks, Pledge. I guess the name is what was confusing to me. Perhaps that it does the initial job (say relieve pain) and the other 1/2 is that it remains? Thanks.
Hi Jillynnie. Well.. here, I made it to complicated. Say you take an medication, and it says short-half life. Might not say that on the vial. So, you know that that drug is a fast-acting one. It will work quickly for you. Xanax, is a fine example. Take a pill, say .05mg, and in 24 hours or less, it will have already done its job and you'll have to take another one. short-half life means fast, acting. I hope I explained it better. The liver, is the one that breaks down the different compounds of these medications. It process's the drug.
Pledge - you didn't make it more complicated.I think I am just overthinking the name. I get the concept, or the actuality of the drug differences, I was hung up on the name itself. I understand 'short acting, long acting' but couldn't wrap my brain around the meaning of 'half life'. To me, it was indicating there was something MORE to the drug other than just being indicative of the 'life expectancy' of the drug why the term 'half life'? I know, I know.. I am putting way to much thought into a name. But, i just thought I was missing something about the drug by not understanding that term. :/
:-0) I understand, from where you're coming from. When you look at it, the way, as you said, the actual words 'halflife'. I've really never looked at it the way you have. True, what works the first 'half' and what in the 2nd 'half'. Its facinates me though, how often a medication, same drug family, different name, slight difference in the chemical make up, and the time spent in your body from one to the other is like apples to oranges. Always amazes me. Then, its non-generic versus generic. The costs involved. How well the name brand does against the no name brand. Always a guessing game. Like laundry detergent, name brand versus store brand. Price and quality, and is the job done. Went on a bit, I do talk ha!

:-0) You better stay away from some of that fantastic java joe that is now becoming famous throughout the country. Seriously though, have you considered trazodone? Side effects are almost nil, non-addictive, or just about that. You know, I as you suffer from insomnia, but I do manage to get a few hours in at night. Mind you, during the day, with the dogs and so on, its impossible or close to it to lay down and get a cat nap in. Thing I don't care for is the amount of medication in my system, and the time or amount of sleep I get in as a return doesn't seem .. you know, fair. Wrong word perhaps. But, its been like that since childhood. Or not much later anyway.
well, I guess I'm experiencing first hand the 1/2 life syndrome. :(
Just got out of the shower, and am having w/d feelings. I am so depressed about this.
I tapered down to one strip yesterday and 1 today and all of a sudden, wham! I am feeling like crap. Guess I should have seen it coming as I was a tad anxious and weepy this morning. Now I can barely type from the shaking. I just put 1/4 strip under my mouth and am hoping that will be all I need. It is taking me forever to type this because I have to keep going back to retype my typos. And, i'm tearing up and cantt see. Well, come to thinko of it I was having some pretty bad RLS last night only my entire body was coming up off the bed. Pretty funny actually. Woulda loved to be a fly on that wall.

Jilly please clarify this a bit for me, I think I misunderstood you on which strength the strips are, are they the 8 mgbupe/2mg naloxone or are they the smaller dose 2mg bupe/.5 mg naloxone. If it is the latter, try taking one whole strip in the am and if you feel true wd 2 hours later, take at least another half strip (I am talking the 2mg bupe/.5 mg naloxone strips. I swear all this time I thought you were on the 8/2's and you were started on 3 of those would be high dose. But 2 of the 2/.5's per day would be a normal starting dose. Please Google the COWS (CLINICAL OPIATE WITHDRAWAL SCALE) sheet/test.if you are in true wd, you will have points on most of the symptoms. If you have a few points on just 1 or 2 symptoms, then you may simply be adjusting still. Even 4 mgs will be fine for you, and make sure it is not only relieving wd, but quelling all cravings. Hope this makes sense my dear.
Patti, I am so glad you saw this. I am on 2mg/.05 strips. I wish to all get out I had been documenting better, but here is how I am pretty sure it has gone. Mon/Tues 2 strips (all days prior were 3), Wed/Thur 1 1/2 strips, (all times was a full strip in the morning, then 1 or just 1/2 (on wed/thur) at 2-3pm. Everything seemed fine as wine until today. I got out of the shower at 1:30pm and about 1:45pm wham! And, I am talking, high heart rate, shaking, anxiety, runny nose. I took 1/4 of strip and sat down (that is when I typed the post) and waited. I had an mani/pedi appt at 2:30pm so I had a little bit of time to see how it was going to work. At 2:15pm I took another quarter. By the time I got to the appt I felt good again. When I got home from errands (6pm) I had to take another because I could feel it coming on, so I took a 1/2 strip. NOW, I am feeling it again?! wth?! I am SO upset and feel SO set back, but feel yucky, too.
New Life 2016 Film
I am going three steps backward!! I should have known it was coming because my whole body was literally jumping off the bed two or three times last night before I fell asleep. That was the only symptoms, but it was crazy. Never had anything like that before. My entire upper body shoulders, head, did this crazy back and forth thing like a spasm then relaxed. Several minutes later, it did it again. Those are the only two that I am aware of because I fell asleep. This morning (as you know) I was pretty emotional, but that didn't raise a flag for me because I didn't even recognize that I was until I was typing to you and the tears started. And, of course the anxiety was there but I was still not putting two and two together. I just took my amitriptyline and clonopine and a buspar ( I am out of my clonapan and I think the pharmacy is closed. I didn't think I needed it till now! It's been waiting on me for two days. I think I will call and see if they are still open. I want to try that rather than take another sliver, but if I have to, I guess I will. I still have two 1/4 from this afternoons' strip. Please, I would love some advise on this situation. Sorry for such the long post, but I just have been needing to get with you and didn't want to bother you if you were at work. ~ Jilly
@Patti - I was able to get to the pharmacy and get my script for Klonopin. I feel a bit better and will be able to get thru the night without taking another sliver. Just anxious as to what tomorrow has in store for me, as I don't really know where I'm at on the stability factor. :(
Hi jillynnie..
Just wanted to say thank you for asking this question. The term 'half-life' can be very misleading and confusing and was to me also in the same way it was to you when I first started learning about medicine.. it refers to biological half-life of a drug or medicine which is basically how long it takes for a drug to reduce to half its pharmacological activity (half its effect).
Here's a link for you to read that I think is helpful and explanatory. Happy Holidays!
